my view on worship leading
Saturday, August 7, 2010
SAJC, being a mission school, has chapel every other thursdays where we sing and listen to a short message to encourage all students. but last thursday, as i was singing along, i was reading the lyrics very carefully. no idea why too.
and i realised something was wrong. being in choir for 4years, i learnt to sing softly whenever we come to the word 'I', signifying that we are humble and small before God. but i figured out that these contemporary songs have too many 'I's. if we are to be humble servants before God, why is it that such songs revolve around us so much? i'm not saying it is wrong for the composers of such lyrics were touched in some way or another when writing these. these lyrics can be very meaningful in asking God to come and stay in our lives and that we can always rely on Him. not to mention the are very focused on how the Holy Spirit is working on them, which is what charismatic churches are focused on many a times.
but they seldom mention about how holy and sacred and magnificent God is, how that we should still be fearful in front of God. hymns included all these.
indeed, Christianity is about our relationship with God but i think no matter how close are to God, there should still be this boundary where we should be humble and fearful.
we can still lead these songs because after all, they are not saying anything bad. however, i feel that we should lead hymns too, and not only when we collect offerings. sure, they may not sound good and are old fashioned and we do not find them appealing but who ARE we worshiping? you? me? or God?
